Microwave Termite Treatment: Chemical-Free Precision for Localized Drywood Termite Infestations

Microwave Termite Treatment: Chemical-Free Precision for Localized Drywood Termite Infestations

Microwave treatment uses focused electromagnetic energy to heat infested wood to termite-lethal temperatures — no chemicals, no tent, no drilling. It's one of the most precise termite treatments available for localized infestations in accessible locations.

What Is Microwave Termite Treatment?

Microwave treatment uses focused electromagnetic energy — similar to the microwave energy in a kitchen microwave oven but calibrated for structural pest control — to rapidly heat the interior of infested wood to temperatures lethal for all termite life stages.

The treatment is delivered through a handheld device pressed against the exterior of the infested wood surface. Microwave energy penetrates up to several inches into the wood, heating termites in their galleries without needing to drill access holes, apply chemicals, or tent the structure.

How Microwave Energy Kills Termites

Microwave energy excites water molecules in biological tissue, generating rapid internal heating. Termites are approximately 70% water, making them highly susceptible to microwave heating:

  • At 120°F (49°C): termites begin dying; eggs denatured
  • At 130°F (54°C): rapid mortality across all life stages within minutes

Because the energy penetrates the wood rather than just heating the surface, it reaches termites in galleries that may be an inch or more inside the wood — without requiring access holes.

Works Through Paint and Finishes

Unlike orange oil (which requires drilling) or fumigation (which requires a tent), microwave treatment works directly through painted, stained, and sealed wood surfaces with no surface preparation needed.

The Microwave Treatment Process

Step 1: Detection

Our inspector uses sounding (tapping) techniques and visual inspection to identify infested wood sections. Hollow-sounding areas with frass or kick-out holes are mapped for treatment.

Step 2: Equipment Setup

The microwave device is positioned against the infested wood surface. The handheld applicator focuses energy precisely on the target area.

Step 3: Treatment

Microwave energy is applied to each infested section for a specified duration. Treatment continues until thermal imaging or probe thermometers confirm the interior wood temperature has reached and sustained the lethal threshold.

Step 4: Verification

Thermal imaging cameras verify lethal temperatures were achieved in all treated sections. Any areas that didn't reach target temperature receive additional treatment.

Step 5: Documentation

All treated sections are documented with photos, measured dimensions, and temperature logs for warranty purposes.

Advantages of Microwave Treatment

  • Zero chemicals — suitable for the most chemically sensitive environments
  • No drilling required — works through existing paint and finishes
  • No evacuation — treatment can proceed with occupants in other areas of the home
  • Precise — treats specific infested sections without affecting surrounding areas
  • Fast — individual sections treated in minutes
  • Kills eggs — heat penetrates and denatures eggs that chemical treatments may miss

Limitations

  • Accessible surfaces only — the device must contact the wood surface; inaccessible areas cannot be treated
  • Not for widespread infestations — treating an entire structure with microwave is not economically practical
  • Room-level, not whole-structure — fumigation is more appropriate for multi-area infestations
  • Not effective for subterranean termites — microwave is specifically for drywood termites

Best Use Cases for Microwave Treatment

Microwave treatment excels in these scenarios:

  • Localized drywood termite infestations in accessible wall sections, door frames, or window frames
  • High-value furniture, antiques, or millwork where drilling would be unacceptable
  • Historic homes with delicate finishes that can't be disturbed
  • Chemically sensitive occupants — asthma, allergies, or chemical sensitivities
  • Spot treatments as a complement to other treatment methods
